Studies on Promoting the Root Development of Dwarf Rootstock in the Double - grafted Maiden Apple Trees

Abstract
Double-grafted maiden dwarf apple trees, Megumi c.v. on M26/seedling, were used for this experiment to investigate how to promote root development at interstock (M26). Binding grafted union between interstock (M26) and rootstock (seedling) with No. 20 copper wire for 3 times, wounding interstock (M26) buds located under the soil, binding plus wounding were treated respectively. Results were obtained as follows:
1. Binding (wiring) plus wounding treatment resulted in better rooting and wider root system than any other treatments.
2. Binding (wiring) promoted root development at interstock (M26), but retarded top growth in the first year.
3. Wounding showed better rooting than the check, but poor rooting compare to the binding (wiring) treatment.
